![]() Aloha! and thank you for inquiring about our work exchange opportunity. We've had a tremendous response from our ad and by word of mouth. We're pleased there are so many who are interested, and, of course, it's wonderful for us to have some extra hands helping! The work exchange cottage is separate from the main house. It has two cute adjoining 8'X10' screened sleeping rooms with electricity. It's designed especially for island living -- mostly plywood and screen. It's quite cozy, and all around it is lush green vegetation, bananas, pineapple, and an anthurium flowers growing under large tree ferns. There is an adjoining kitchen area with counter and shelves, table and chairs, gas stove and a refrigerator, a sink and running water. You can use the facilities in the main house with us. Occasionally, we also use the guest rooms for work exchange housing depending upon reservations.
In exchange for staying with us we ask each woman to work 20 hours per week. Mostly it will be in housework and cleaning, yard work and weeding, and working with the flowers and in the garden. There are always other projects that come up, and if you have other skills such as carpentry, painting, etc. we will try to put those to use also. The schedule can be flexible with time to go off exploring a few days at a time. Everyone is responsible for their own food and cooking. Generally food costs are a little higher here, but there is a wonderful farmer's market which is reasonable for fruits, vegies, fish, etc. We also can order wholesale from the health food distributor, and you learn to shop for bargains and cut coupons. We visualize women being here for three months or longer. The time is meant to enable women to stay in Hawai´i for an extended period of time without having to pay for costly accommodations. We trust it will be a very positive experience for all of us, and enable us all to meet women from other parts of the islands, country and world. Hilo, the largest town (45,000) on the island is 10 miles away. Because this island is fairly rural, there is very little public transportation. We are about one and a half miles from the highway, and there is only one bus that goes to Hilo in the morning and heads back in the afternoon. However, one of us usually goes into town a few times a week, and you could ride with us or possible other neighbors or guests. It may be that you will be so content here you may not even want to leave the property! If you are thinking of renting a car, you can plan on about $25 a day or $150 a week minimum, and you'll need to be at least 25 years old, and have a credit card and valid drivers license. We will provide transportation to the Farmers' market and supermarket, usually on either Wednesdays or Saturdays. We are putting together a schedule of when women are available and when the space is available. If you are interested in registering for the work exchange program, please indicate this when filling out the form on the following page, ...Await You. Please indicate in the question area of the form if you need more information or have other questions. We certainly have a wonderful world wide community of women! Come and join us in Paradise. With Much Aloha, Patty & Kay |
